I loved this video! There was a quality about it that sounds like it could have been pulled straight from DH, but it's also Anjani's own. She has a lovely voice.
I loved the bit near the end, with Leonard swaying to the music in B/W. Her dance partner, looks like Leonard from the back at times, at others, it's obviously a younger man.
Still, I think it's a beautiful waltz (it is a waltz, right?
), and Anjani's voice is so pure. I like her much better than Sharon. (sorry Tom). Can't wait to hear the entire CD. I have Perla's CD. So different in style, of course. I've Jennifer's also. It would be nice to have all his singers' CDs. They add such flavour to his music IMHO.
Thanks for the look-see.
Linda.

Hi Linda and all,
That was absolutely stunning! Dick heard it awhile back and told me that he thought that it was "Hallelujah" quality and I agree. I think this is going to be one of those songs that have a life of their own.
When is it going to be released? I can hardly wait.
Also, I just have to mention that Jarkko needs to get a screen shot of Leonard in the tuxedo to place next to Geoffrey in the BL gallery. Geoffrey, after all these years, Leonard finally is dressing up to your standards.

Hi A.M.,
I didn't really notice how she sang the word 'decent'. This gives me another excuse to go and view it again. She really is lovely. I heard/read from several places that her voice can go very deep in its pitch. Like Leonard but an octave higher. I'm very much looking forward to her CD. I truly hope that she can carry on with Leonard's music as Jennifer Warnes did. Sharon as well. So many of his songs have had beautiful treatment from female singers. This seemed like a 'natural' for her.
Regards,
Linda.

Hi All,
I continue to be entranced by this wonderful song and performance. I apologize in advance for spending my time writing here as I'm getting ready for a trip and not answering a few of you via email. I hope you understand.
This video plus the arrival of "Book of Longing" has occupied the sub-conscious level of my mind since, at least, last Monday.
"Turn up the music,
Pour out the wine,
Stop at the surface,
The surface is fine.
We don't need to go any deeper."
Originally, I thought about how much this contrasts with "A Thousand Kisses Deep." And now I'm not trying to make this into one of those threads or posts that people complain about in trying to wring meaning out of every last word and phrase of Leonard's.
My brother is going through a divorce now. Watching the video brings me to tears each time I see it as it appears to be the opposite of the situation of Leonard and Anjani. My brother and his wife are moving apart rather than becoming closer.
Today, I was looking through "Beautiful Losers" and came across this passage:
"Can an old scholar find love at last and stop having to pull himself off every night so he can get to sleep? I don't hate books anymore. I've forgotten most of what I've read and, frankly, it never seemed very important to me or to the world. My friend F. used to say in his hopped up fashion: We've got to learn to stop bravely at the surface."
Pardon me, but I think that there is much to comprehend in thinking about all of this. I don't pretend to have any answers, but I know that wondering about the questions enriches my mental life-it is probably infinitely more important than whether a book is sold on ebay-signature or no.

Hi Joe,
Thanks for your interesting post. I am glad I heard this song along with the video the first time I heard it, because the video adds a lot to the song, for me. I think the overall mood is both light and melancholy.
Here is a thought that occurs regarding one aspect depth/surface difference: If joy is the opposite of sorrow, and surface is the opposite of depth, then the dance of life involves stepping into both. That's why, "the surface is fine". Maybe surface, here, means lightness and playfulnesss.
Here is a quote from Osho:
Very good wishes to you and your brother,
Diane

Here is a quote from Osho:
Your quote from BL suggests at another meaning of the word "surface", but as you say, thinking about these things is enriching.Happiness is a little shallow; sadness is very deep, it has a depth to it. A man who has never been sad will be shallow, just on the surface. Sadness is like a dark night, very deep. Darkness has a silence to it, and sadness also. Happiness bubbles; there is a sound in it. It is like a river in the mountains; sound is created. But in the mountains, a river can never be very deep; it is always shallow. When the river comes to the plain it becomes deep, but the sound stops. It moves as if not moving. Sadness has depth.
Very good wishes to you and your brother,
Diane
Dear Diane,
You have posted some excellent thoughts! I'm just getting back from my trip and hope to share more soon, but I wanted to thank you for responding in such a thoughtful and enriching way.
I've been reading "Book of Longing" and it is Leonard's revision's that keep getting my attention. He's posted a whole new different version of some of his poems and songs-like a new version of "A Thousand Kisses Deep."
I'm having computer problems and I'm not sure how much I'll be able to post, but I'll try.
All the best,
Joe

Dear Diane ~
With my having been more absent than present here, I've missed these past, more-than-several exchanges on this thread. I, too, appreciate what you've written in response to Joe's posting, which I appreciated with its own points and comparisons.
I'm in feast-or-famine mode with everything that's appeared in my life lately.
