Sandra, it's not a big deal, like spring, summer, autumn, winter, comes and goes. If you want an Eastern bunny-have that, Christmas tree-holly jolly, whatever. Why don't you start a celebration for menopause-what's wrong with that?- same thing as the first period, cycle of body, cycle of life.

Sandra~
You sound like a very caring aunt.
I don't have anything of tradition or personal to add.
I do think it is a very good idea to make this event a celebration.
A gift that would be a keepsake would be perfect. A necklace or ring maybe? And a card or letter full of heart felt things from her caring aunt....
regards,
Laurie

I remember that my cousin (who was the eldest girl) her parents bought a bottle of champagne and celebrated her becoming a woman. I think they gave her a charm bracelet or something, but the main thing was the acknowledgement of coming into womanhood and that there was no taboo about the topic (particularly for her younger brothers). She remembers it as a very positive life event.
What do we do for boys to celebrate similar?

Hi all,
Very strange. When I was that age, the entire subject of menstruation was something of a 'secret'. Information was passed between giggling girlfriends and much of the information was incorrect. I don't recall it being connected with anything other than a nuisance or a a rumour.
Of course, there are some cultures that mark this event with ceremonies. Some of which make my blood curdle, however, that's the way it is. I don't know about marking it with a gift, that would be up to the family dynamic, I suppose. In my family, this would not be cause for celebration. It would be a 'secret'.
I suppose a good talk about the birds and the bees, and a small, feminine gift would be nice, although some might think it sexist in some way. Whatever you decide to do, is good. A fond rememberance for your neice would be much nicer than the confusion my generation went through. Your neice is turning into a woman, you love your neice and things seem to be working as they should. I'd say you're off to a good start.
Linda.

LIKE HELL.
I want a refund. Maybe I'll trade it in for menopause.

Oh, and this reminds me! I was reading my teen magazine, and I saw an article about "celebrating the menstral cycle" ...
Would you like me to scan it for you hon?

"Trade it in for menopause" ? Scan a teen magazine. I suspect that you either have PMS or you're not taking very seriously a subject which is important to someone else. This is fine. But you do have the option of keeping your snide comments to yourself. Just a thought.

Incidentally, you quoted the words "Feminine gift" out of context.
