What, no "If It Be Your Will" (Webb Sisters), "Nightingale", (Anjani), nothing by Judy Collins etc. etc...give me a break!

Steve - that's on my list too - one of the only other good tracks on a generally attrocious covers album!

Since Anjani released her version of Nightingale first, does it count as a cover? ;)

What about Perla Batalla's version of "Ballad Of The Absent Mare"?
Is it excluded because it is a duet?
I always get shivers up and down my spine when I listen to it.

The whole album (Bird on the Wire The Songs of Leonard Cohen) is fabulous.

Okay, this isn't about a great Leonard Cohen cover by a female artist. It's a question to the fandom, brought on by the very-common-verging-on-ubiquitous inappropriate cover of Hallelujah. The one I just saw on YouTube was done by a fifth-grade girl, with all the usual verses, including the kitchen chair and the holy dove, etc. My question is: what would you suggest as a more appropriate Leonard Cohen song to be sung by an 11 year old girl? Does such a thing exist?

Not a cover, but LC's duet with Julie Christensen on 'Joan of Arc' and that one part during 'Take This Waltz'.

Pure cover - kd Lang's 'Hallelujah'.

I love the whole of Jennifer Warnes Famous Blue Raincoat album. It was produced by Roscoe Beck who states it as a labour of love for all concerned in the production. The idea for it was spawned way back in 1979. In fact, this cover album is a main contributor to the fact that Leonard had a major resurgence in the late 80's. Jennifer persistently promoted her covers of his songs against some serious disinterest. Roscoe says she was laughed out of the record producers' offices! All I can say is thank G-d she persevered!

It's very difficult to choose 'a' song from it but my favourite is actually not a cover but a song both Jennifer and Leonard wrote together "Song Of Bernadette". Jennifer's birth name was Bernadette.

Here's a live performance of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZIFavgLd38

So difficult to choose an actual cover. Here are those in playing order from that album which are available on YouTube -

Bird On A Wire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTIaidNgh1w

Joan Of Arc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzIrDe9EpUQ
Ain't No Cure For Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPdUkWCDmGM
Came So Far For Beauty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWHWYM5BfPM
Night Comes On (20th Anniversary FBR album) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxhCbJLSkcY
Ballad Of The Absent Mare as Ballad Of The Runaway Horse (20th Anniversary FBR album) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BD7CFwiIsI
If It Be Your Will (20th Anniversary FBR album) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOXH8ivbkkw

EDIT: ..... and I've just realised I've posted 10 Great Leonard Cohen Covers by ONE Female Artist :)

Ah, but did she sing, "Remember when I moved in you, the holy dove, she was moving too"? (I have absolutely no intention of watching the video, and I actually don't care, so no need to respond, but I thought it was fun to ask!)

Incidentally, I think that this subject came up on the forum once before (quite possibly about this very video of which you speak), so you may wish to seek it out, or perhaps start a new topic to get a new discussion going, if you are interested.

Cheers!

yes, this eleven-year-old girl did sing the "remember when I moved in you" line... in a school assembly. It's almost as though words have no meanings or something. Any idea where I might look for a previous topic on the subject?
