"Bird on a Wire" was last night awarded the Grierson Prize (Best Documentary on the Arts) at the National Film Theatre.
In terms of prestige (other than the Oscar), this is the most important prize that is awarded annually to a documentary!
More info will be posted on the official website (it's not updated yet):

Fantastic news.
The Grierson Awards commemorate the pioneering Scottish documentary filmmaker John Grierson (1898 – 1972), famous for Drifters and Night Mail and the man widely regarded as the father of the documentary.
Established in 1972, the Grierson Awards recognise and celebrate documentaries from Britain and abroad that have made a significant contribution to the genre and that demonstrate quality, integrity, creativity, originality and overall excellence.
The awards ceremony was apparently recorded to be shown on Sky Arts HD.

The Bridgeman Art Library Best Arts Documentary was awarded to Bird on a Wire. Chris Durlacher, Chairman of the jury said: “Utterly compelling. Bird on a Wire is beautifully filmed and an intimate portrait of an artist at the peak of his talent. Although it was filmed almost forty years ago its recent official release means this is the first time this documentary has gained the distinction it richly deserves.”
