I was under the impression that in 1973 Leonard played only to the troops, so this is very interesting. Do you know the exact date of this performance? It seems to have been in front of a very small group of people.

April 19, 1972, and taken from the film "Bird on a Wire". The person who posted the video was off by a year. To my knowledge, no recordings have surfaced from Leonard's 1973 performances there, at least in trading circles

Here is another one from the same person..."No Way to Say Goodbye". I love how the audience sings to Leonard! He still says 1973....but I'll take the word of experts that it's 1972.

I will ask my cousin Lloyd if he saw him in 1972 or 1973 and where in Tel Aviv it was...he has told me this story a couple of times
of how cool it was to be in such a small room for this...more when he writes me back... Mutti(Leslie)

Here's the link to the So Long, Marianne clip on Youtube, part of a series of clips that from 1972 from Bird on a Wire.

The road90.com clip only shows the onstage part of the clip that's on Youtube.

Hi AvidCohenFan,
Here is the link to the 1st of 10 clips on Youtube:

It's a bit tricky, but here's one way to do it: Go to the link above. This was posted by messalina79. Click on her name in the top right (NOT where it says "More from Messalina79"). Then you'll be at all her videos (and by the way I just saw that she has some other amazing-looking footage from 1985 which she has recently uploaded). You can search her videos, and if you search for "1972" you'll get the Bird on a Wire clips, but not in order. However, messalina79 has kindly put the number of each clearly in the notes, so you can see where you are.
I wonder if messalina79 is a member of the forum: she's done an amazing job.
I hope this works for you.

Thanks a lot Sue, but I've seen all of messalina79's videos (some of them are the best on YouTube); I'm not sure whether or not the ten videos are the whole Bird on a Wire movie.

Yes, I wondered that too. The tenth one does seem to be the end of the Jerusalem concert, with the bus leaving, but there were no credits so I couldn't figure it out. You've really got me wondering now. Maybe I'll try to contact messalina79 through Youtube and ask her.

I was in the audiance.
I remember there was a fight in the arena and Leonard Cohen joined the fight. I was amazed. He was protecting his audience.

Could you please elaborate? This sounds very interesting!

I'm messalina79 on YouTube and I put the clips of Bird on a Wire up - Sue has contacted me through YouTube to ask about the clips (I didn't realise there was a discussion going on about them here as well or I would have jumped in sooner!) this was my reply to her:
I have not uploaded the entire Bird on a Wire doc as it stands - I originally meant to put only a couple of clips of my favourite scenes, but then people asked for more as it is a rare film, so I went through and picked parts that worked as 'stand alone' clips but I'm afraid I haven't done it in a very organised way! There are scenes of him playing Chelsea Hotel #1 and Avalanche that I haven't put up as they are on YouTube already. Other bits I haven't put up are linking scenes of concert footage, brief snippets of interviews, or the band travelling, etc, as they didn't work as clips in their own right - though I have put up one such montage as it was set to Passing Through.
I understand from the Forum that Tony Palmer says that the version circulating isn't even the entire film, and he doesn't have a copy of it at all, which is a shame, I'd love to see it restored to all its glory!
So, no it's not the whole film as is currently available. Someone else on YouTube (RockofAges1) is uploading bits of the film labelled as from 1973, which is confusing!
Reading through the thread above - yes, the last clip with the bus leaving is the very end, the credits roll immediately after (unless there's more that's been cut out of this version, as Tony Palmer seems to indicate).
Sorry if I've caused any confusion!
Ruth
PS - would love to hear more about the fight, do tell!
