Les Inrockuptibles (France) has again returned to Leonard. Issue # 709 (June 30 to July 6, 2009)
has a six page feature "Compagnons de route - Portfolio Cohen par Isserman",
a gallery of seven b/w photos taken between 1981-1987,
plus one color photo of Dominique herself, shot by Leonard on Hydra in 1983.

The same issue has Michael J on the cover plus a 24 page supplement about his career, with a lot of
photos.

Thanks to Dominique Boile for the info & hard copy!

Dem,
Thanks for sending me the PDF.
I have added the article to my website, so if anyone wants to read it please go to http://www.maartenmassa.be and click on "LC Documents". You'll find the article near the bottom of the page. I have only used the article of LC, but Dem sent me the entire magazine in PDF.

Enjoy,
Maarten

Many thanks, Dem and Maarten, for making these available. Apart from the terrific images - he looks great, doesn't he? - it's good to have more detail on the familiar ones, e.g. I'd always assumed the park-bench one was in Paris but it's nice to know exactly where; also, I don't think I'd have guessed that the one with the typewriter and guitar was in LA - but I suppose a stark-looking room can be anywhere!

Nice text, too: would be irritating in English, sounds just right in French!

Regarding the "swimsuit/on the stomach" photo.......how in the world did this man EVER get it into his head that he was ugly? Would someone PLEASE explain that to me? His is one of the most beautiful faces God ever sculpted........

"Your beauty lost to you yourself, just as it was lost to them". Not to us, though! 8)

Edit: I had to look this one up, but to me, it is one that - almost paradoxically, some might think -, stands for Leonard's real, i.e. "inner" beauty (although or rather precisely because, yes, the stunning effect of the "swimsuit/on the stomach" photo is, of course, by no means lost on me! 8) ):

"I am invisible to night
Only certain shy women see me
All my hideous days of visibility
I longed for their smiles
Now they lean out of their shabby
plans-for-the-evening
so we may salute one another
Sisters of mine
of my own shattered people
going after third-choice lovers
they smile at me to indicate
that we can never meet
as long as we permit
this order of things to persist
in which we are the wretched ones"

(From: The Energy of Slaves, 1972)
