Does anyone happen to know how one may go about obtaining rights to record a cover of a particular Leonard Cohen song? I promise it won't be another Hallelujah.

Hi wittykat - It's likely that Harry Fox has the information on licensing that you want.

Thanks a lot! I wonder if there is a similar site/company for Canada?

Canada's equivalent to the Harry Fox Agency is called the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency Ltd. Their website is @ http://www.cmrra.ca/default.htm

Once you find the song(s) you want in their catalogue, it's a straightforward process. Basically, you have to pay about $0.08 per song per CD pressed. You'll find all the info online!

There's different agencies that function in the same role all over the world.

Good luck with the paperwork - and be sure to let everyone hear your recording when it's made!
