I have seen in many videos that L.C. is smoking a lot. Does anybody know what brand he is smoking?

Marlboro Lights.

Short answer: Leonard Cohen was known as a Marlboro Lights smoker - as already pointed out. On at least one occasion, he was photographed smoking Vantages.

in an 2001 interview (I think, Ten New Songs press stuff... or was it in 2006 interview, as he smoked in In My Secret Life clip), Leonard said that he just stopped smoking. The story went like (from my bad memory, now paraphrasing) "I went to the doctor, and he put that little machine with camera into my throat, and I for the first time saw that thing with which I am making music, and I said Do I have it, and he said Well not yet, but you are on the way, so I stopped." It was quite spooky story. Then he added that he still shows high interest in smoker's company (obviously attracted by the smoke).

In another occasion, LC alluded that until the end of 1993 tour he was drinking way too much. Anyhow, he was on painkillers during that tour, because of his back, somebody said that he sometimes couldn't stand on the stage because of the pain. (What's quite obvious from the recordings and rare VHS tapes.)


Now, I'm thinking, it could be 2006 interview, I vaguely recall that maybe Anjani was in the studio (was it KCRW? Blue Alert promotion) and that the interviewer was surprised as LC smoked heavily in Ten New Songs period. And the comment from Anjani was that his voice is much better now as he isn't smoking for years now (so, at least since 2001).

Btw, he also stated the *exact* count of cigarettes he smoked between 1985 and 1988, and got that voice

As for that Cigarette Smoking Man from the X files, wasn't his nickname DEEP THROAT (I recall Mulder & Scully calling him so) because of his deep, smoking voice? Another coincidence...

I heard a 2006 interview with LC today on WNPR-FM while heading to the newsroom. Apparently, doctors had found something they thought could be precancerous when he went to have a throat problem checked out. He said it scared him out of smoking. That'd do it.

Have to see if I can find the audio for that. The poster above is so neat LOL.

I believe the doctor's response was " . . . no, but you're on the royal road . . . " ~ the rest is pretty incredibly accurate, Tom. That's the level of your memory ? If only...
