I'm a huge fan of the music of Beck. I read something you all might find odd. Beck describes his album Midnite Vultures as...."What if Leonard Cohen would have hooked up with Rick James in '78? It would have been awesome!"
For those who have heard the Midnite Vultures album, what do you think of that description?...i personally love it....
this might be a weird topic...i'm new and don't know what you guys talk about yet..heeh

what's even more amazing is that if you consider what Beck's follow up to MV was....sea change!!....i think these back to back albums get my vote as the two most opposite back to back albums ever.(MV being prince style funk and sea change being traditional country-folk)

On Beck's earlier albums he would alternate his loud, electronic, funky tunes with those that were more acoustic, organic, ballads. Lately he's been presenting these "opposing" styles on alternate albums.
The album before midnight vultures, Mutations, was more like the Sea Change album and I highly recommend it. The writing on the Mutations album actually sounds very Cohen-inspired to me. Some of the songs also have the waltz-like swing that much of Cohen's music employs.
I saw Beck play with his band a month or so ago. It was wonderful. He played a wide range of both types of songs including all the hits.
Most people that have only heard him on the radio have only heard his more electronic/rap type songs. If anyone has dismissed him based on these hits, they should really look into the Mutations and Sea Change albums or some the duets he has done with Lucinda Williams and others.

i'm almost 100% sure Beck has never done anything with Lucinda williams. If he did I'm pretty sure i would know. But maybe i'm wrong
I always thought the song "Broken train" off midnite vultures had lyrics that were very much like Cohens.
You should really give Sea Change another chance, it's really quite excellent. The chorus of "Guess i'm doing fine" is enough to bring one to tears...
