I am currently enjoying Memories, music and lyrics, since re-discovering it with the Fantastic Merlins' cover, and also re-visiting that wonderful dance to the song, in I am a Hotel.

But these days mostly what gets me is any and all of the spoken versions of A Thousand Kisses Deep

The band is playing Auld Lang Syne
But the heart will not retreat
There's no forsaking what you love
No existential leap
As witnessed here in time and blood
A thousand kisses deep

I've been listening again closely to "Night Comes On" and these lines are the ones getting me at the moment -

"I needed so much
To have nothing to touch
I've always been greedy that way"

"When I'm gone
I'll be yours, yours for a song"

"Yes, and here's to the few
Who forgive what you do
And the fewer who don't even care"

"I want to cross over, I want to go home"

....wonderful song :D

There are many in your life
And many still to be.
Since you are a shining light,
There's many that you'll see.

I agree, but I think it's more than that. I think it's the humour too, and the hope. In many of his songs there's a beautiful ray of hope through the darkness. For instance, two of my favourite lines -

There's a crack in everything
that's how the light gets in

and

I greet you from the other side
of sorrow and despair
with a love so vast and shattered
it will reach you everywhere

Both carry so much hope. I feel comforted every time I hear them.

With absolutely no exaggeration I believe this is the greatest lyric about friendship I have ever come upon.
The few who forgive what you do and the fewer who don't even care... I sing this to myself every time I feel like my friends are going against what I am and what I do. Which is pretty often, sadly.

Every heart to love will come
But like a refugee

Love this topic and all the previous lines that have been quoted
I wonder for we Leonard fans if there are any words that Leonard has written that don't pierce our hearts.
I feel as he grows older that his focus on spirit and death are as comforting to me as his early love songs were. He is accepting our place in the universe with equanimity and that is reassuring to anyone who loves some one.

In streams of light I clearly saw
The dust you seldom see,
Out of which the Nameless makes
A Name for one like me.

So we’ll go no more a-roving
So late into the night,
Though the heart be still as loving,
And the moon be still as bright.
For the sword outwears its sheath,
And the soul outwears the breast,
And the heart must pause to breathe,
And love itself have rest.
Though the night was made for loving,
And the day returns too soon,
Yet we’ll go no more a-roving
By the light of the moon.

I was born in a beauty salon
My father was a dresser of hair
My mother was a girl you could call on
When you called she was always there
When you called she was always there

Ah but don't go home with your hard-on
It will only drive you insane
You can't shake it or break it with your Motown
You can't melt it down in the rain ...etc.

I know exactly what you mean - the lyrics you quote convey that absolutely, and for me I am also touched especially by:

Oh the world is sweet
the world is wide
and she's there where
the light and the darkness divide

Such a beautiful image is created there. Everything and nothing.

Yes this is a beautiful image. From what lyric or poem is it?

Hi TineDoes,

Here is the answer to your above question - it is called "The Ballard Of The Absent Mare" and is the last song on the Recent Songs CD.

You can view and hear the lyrics from the LC files; just click on the left hand side under song index and go from there.

You might also find this info below from the neighbouring thread on Buddhism very interesting -

I hope this helps you. :)

Do not say the moment was imagined;
Do not stoop to strategies like this.

Dear TineDoes,

Just as my favourite LC song changes over time, so it is with the lyrics that 'get to you'.

Right now it's

I bite my lip,
I buy what I'm told.
From the latest (LC sings "greatest" sometimes) hit,
to the wisdom of old.

and

I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
He said to me, (LC may add "Leonard" occasionally) you must not ask for so much.
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
She cried to me, hey, why not ask for more?

But seriously, with LC, one simply needs to pop his CDs into a CD-changer and hit 'random' :D

Lately, with all the insanity going on here in the US, especially the Islamaphobia that seems to be running rampant, I've been thinking of the song "Story of Isaac". The lines:
A scheme is not a vision
and you never have been tempted
by a demon or a god.
You who stand above them now,
your hatchets blunt and bloody,
you were not there before,
Also the line:
the peacock spreads his deadly fan
This song just seems to be speaking to the arrogant person (and I use that term lightly) who is seeking his 15 minutes of fame at the expense of World Peace.
