In "Winnie", was Auden with "friends" or in a "brothel"? :?:
Where did you find the quote?

Andrew - 'Fraid I can't answer your first question but it sounds like he'd have been happy with either. The quote comes from "31 December, 1947," The Table Talk of W.H. Auden, compiled by Alan Ansen, ed. Nicholas Jenkins published in New York, by Sea Cliff Press around 1989/1990. Have I wrongly attributed?

Dear Damellon,
I agree: he would be happy in either 8) .
I don't have "31 December, 1947" in my Auden stuff (at least, what I've trawlled through so far!).
All of which serves to say I need to read more of the great man.
