Patyou, I also wondered, but I think: Canadian Songwriters' Hall of Fame. I guess it was given in honour of Leonard's recent induction, and Lightfoot is already the member (now, checked this thru Google:-)

You're right, Kush. Those are truly wonderful... and the title "Heart With No Companion" immediately came to mind as I read them.

Well, I think that's a kind and very generous description - one of which they'd both approve, I'm sure. But Leonard Cohen has an internet newsgroup and a chatroom - as well as this very active web-site forum. Gordon Lightfoot doesn't have anything like that, because his work hasn't the depth or quality to inspire continual discussion on a scale anywhere equal to Leonard's. But he's good, and his song 'Early Morning Rain' will probably be remembered for quite a while amongst folk enthusiasts. Leonard is a giant, however - an icon. He is a multi-faceted genius who appeals to intelligent thinking people starved of intellectual stimuli. If Janis had met Gordon I don't think she would have sucked him off, and if she had done so I don't think he would have been capable afterwards of sitting down and writing a song all about it like Leonard was able to do. Gordon has never done anything bad like Leonard - and being only good is not conducive to becoming legendary.

Gordon's song titles seem almost, if not, by design. Not sure why he left out a J, Q, V, X, and Z. However, I think these could work  :

Jam, Toast, and Honey
Quiet the Night
Venus in the Mist
Xtraneous to Love
Zebras and You

Now, all he needs are the words, and the full alphabet will be his. That's quite a list.

I agree, of course, Geoffrey, that Leonard is a genius... that his songs have more depth... yet, Gordon softly and gently satisfies the lighter paths that are also pleasingly life. Leonard is my choice, too... yet, Gordon has a place of his own in the music world.

Gordon Lightfoot is a songwriter

Leonard Cohen converts poetry into song

and both Gordon and Leonard are masters at what they do. :)

"Sundown, you better take care if I find you've been creeping round my back stairs. Sometimes I think it's a sin when I feel like I'm winning when I'm losing again"
My favourite Lightfoot song....Sundown :)

Haha..GL writes songs you green eyed Vulcan...you're s'posed to have a good time singing them. GL's songs will live on as long as Canada does - or atleast until its assimilated by USA  ..then all Canadians will listen to Bob Dylan.

While that is probably true I have suspected he appeals even more to pseudo-intellectuals than to intellectuals.

We sang the song Boss Man in grade 6 too
Boss Man Boss Man what do you say
I gotta get you alone in the mine some day
Boss Man Boss Man turn it around
If you don't look away how can I sit down
(A) Look at this load u(C)pon my (A) back
Gotta get this wheel (C) back on the (A) track
I can't hold on but I (C) can't let (A) go
And I can't say 'yes' I (C) can't say (A) 'no'

Holes in my pockets and holes in my shoes
If you're ready for me I'm-a ready for you
The company plan takes all my pay
Got a child in July and another last May

Boss Man Boss Man what do you say
Gotta get you alone in the mine some day
Push your face down in the coal
'Cause you got no heart you got no soul

Country life's the life for me
In ten more years I'll a pensioner be
The young lad knows when the girls are out
Why you might say he's a rural sprout

Boss Man Boss Man what do you say
Gotta get you alone in the mine some day
Boss Man Boss Man clear the track
You're gonna tear the skin right offa my back

Boss Man Boss Man what do you say
If you can't lend a hand then get outta my way
It'll be murder in the first degree
If you ever lay your hands on me

Boss Man Boss Man pay my rent
A dollar I've earned is a dollar I've spent
The company plan takes all my check
For breaking my back and risking my neck

Boss Man Boss Man what do you say
I gotta get you alone in the mine some day
I can't hold on but I can't let go
And I can't say 'yes' I can't say 'no'
Some (most) of his songs are very Canadiana This song makes me think of the cole mines in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton

I've always been somewhat of a fan of GL, ever since The Wreck Of The Edmond Fitzgerald... just his name conjures up fond memories from years and years ago.. but I was wondering which, from the list you provided, Tri-me, are songs he has covered/recorded, not just ones he has written - or vice versa. I know he didn't write Me And Bobby McGee... we have to give that to Kris Kristofferson - but honestly, I don't know - but would like to know, which ones he wrote (or didn't write, if that would be easier) from the list you posted.

Thanks, Tri-me!
