The benefit I see of all these awards, lists, and halls of fame is in the years that follow, after all of us are gone... and some, young music enthusiast comes across Leonard's plaque or name in writing somewhere and interest is piqued by the words written there and the question arises, "Who is Leonard Cohen!?!" By then, perhaps, this question will be moot as it will have reached the equivalency of "Who is Bob Dylan!?!" or "Who is Beethoven!?!"
Until then, however, I favour Leonard's name being placed anywhere and everywhere... not because he needs the ego support of this, but so that others who follow in succeeding generations might experience the very same pleasure and deep satisfaction of his concepts, lyrics, music, philosophy, approach to life, thinking, and interaction, and his mentor-worthy self... that keep us coming here as often as we do... and to the Events... and to wishing him well on holidays... and to reading his works... and to buying his albums... and to praying that he go on tour... We rest in our contentment, or shall I say complacency, deep in our velvet seats, of knowing of him and being so familiar with him and his work... and question with "Who cares about all of this anyway?"
Posterity.
The rewards are so great for discovering him, the avenues that bring someone here, and even more importantly to his work, well fit the adage "The end justifies the means."

I believe I've been making my same case for years, as every time such possibilities of awards arise, the 'value' of such inevitably arises, with some arguing for and others against.
On a marketing level, it may only be a tool... and on other levels, only a this or a that.
There's a difference between being interested in competition and attached to the outcome; and being grateful for what is given you.
On a personal level, Leonard may not be impressed by such matters or care, deeply or at all. Still, I say, remember the humility in his posture, his voice, and his words... and remember his handkerchief to his eye... and k.d. lang's bow and kiss to Leonard's hands, and Leonard's responding bow, at the Canadian Songwriter's Hall of Fame Awards... and, at some level, when Leonard is bestowed appreciation, I feel and believe that Leonard cares.

Since there are and will continue to be newcomers here, who may not at face value know the difference, and may not recognize the intentional sarcasm of the first element along with the second one of Tony's comment; I'm in no way, never have been, and never will be, in a spokesperson position with regard to Leonard Cohen.
On a slightly different note, someone in a spokesperson position with regard to him would not 'make a case' in a public venue such as this for his inclusion in nominations or for posterity. Leonard would never allow that sort of thing.
As for me, however
, one totally apart from Leonard's camp, I'll make my case, for my beliefs, as best I can

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is not just for Rock Musicians.John.Hannover wrote:Rock and roll hall of fame? Since when is Leonard Cohen rock and roll? (Thank god he isn't.)
Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan are all in the Rock Hall.
Leonard Cohen and Joan Baez belong in that group.
