Leonard Cohen to be Inducted Into Songwriter's Hall of Fame
Re: Leonard Cohen to be Inducted Into Songwriter's Hall of Fame
Well the awards just keep rolling in for Leonard. I always say there are no coincidences - everything happens for a reason. Good things really do come to those who wait (or don't expect it). This is just Leonard's time to shine for all the world to see at last

LEONARD COHEN - COHEN, FOSTER AND EARTH, WIND & FIRE UP FOR HALL OF FAME HONOUR
COHEN, FOSTER AND EARTH, WIND & FIRE UP FOR HALL OF FAME HONOUR
LEONARD COHEN and producer/composer DAVID FOSTER will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2010.
The 75-year-old Bird On A Wire singer has endured a difficult few months after collapsing onstage in Spain last year (09) and postponing a string of European concerts earlier this month (Feb10) to recover from a sports-related injury, but he will be saluted by the prestigious organisation this summer, when he joins Foster and Earth, Wind & Fire members Maurice White, Philip Bailey and Verdine White among the songwriting inductees.
Jackie DeShannon, Johnny Mandel, Larry Dunn and Al MCKay will also be honoured at the gala.
Hall of Fame chairman Hal David says, "Our 2010 inductees are truly representational of the heart and soul of the world's popular music soundtrack.
"We are looking forward to another memorable evening, where we honor their extraordinary accomplishments."
The class of 2010 will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on 17 June during a ceremony in New York.

Re: Leonard Cohen to be Inducted Into Songwriter's Hall of Fame
I know that all of us on here are fans of Leonard but on looking through the previous persons who have previously been awarded this accolade and so like Wendy, I am somewhat bemused that Leonard has waited this long to be accepted. Bizarre in the least surely?.
Certainly deserved, shame it wasn't long before some others were inducted (dare I mention the Bee Gees

I guess it all started for me sometime around Christmas 1967 and now, goodness me, it's.........2018 and over fifty years later.

Leonard Cohen Leads Songwriters Hall Of Fame Inductees
By Kevin Richards on February 17th, 2010

The Songwriters Hall of Fame has announced their inductees for 2010.
The list of nominees included Lou Reed and Garth Brooks; however, the final inductee list has been narrowed down to Leonard Cohen, David Foster (”The Glory Of Love”), Jackie DeShannon (”What The World Needs Now Is Love”), Johnny Mandel (”Close Enough For Love”) and Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Larry Dunn and Al McKay.
The 41st annual induction and awards dinner will happen June 17 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Want to go? Make sure you’ve got your finances in order: ticket prices for the event start at $1,000 dollars (proceeds benefit the Songwriters Hall of Fame).
“Our 2010 inductees are truly representational of the heart and soul of the world’s Popular Music soundtrack,” says Chairman/CEO Hal David. “We are looking forward to another memorable evening where we honor their extraordinary accomplishments.”
From the press release:
Leonard Cohen:
Leonard Cohen received the Grammy 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his legendary career of artistic accomplishments in songwriting and performing. Over 2,000 covers of Cohen’s songs have been recorded by artists such as R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Elton John, Judy Collins, Willie Nelson and most recently, Justin Timberlake’s rendition of “Hallelujah” that appeared on Cohen’s 1984 Various Positions album. Cohen always had an interest in music, but it wasn’t until 1966 that his focus turned to songwriting after gaining international recognition for his poetry. Before he released a single song, Cohen sold the highly successful “Suzanne” to Judy Collins which later was included on his debut album, The Songs of Leonard Cohen in 1967 along with “Sisters of Mercy,” and “So Long, Marianne.” His next two albums, Songs from a Room and Songs of Love and Hate solidified Cohen’s iconic status with “Bird on a Wire” and “Famous Blue Raincoat.” His multidimensional lyrics have captured fans spanning generations and nationalities for decades. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (2006) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2008) for his outstanding work. Cohen’s world tour, which inaugurated in May 2008, is still playing to sold-out crowds.

Cohen, Foster get songwriting honours

Montreal-born singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen and Canadian producer David Foster are to be admitted to the U.S.-based Songwriters Hall of Fame this year.
The virtual Hall of Fame honours the best composers and lyricists around the world.
Cohen, who received a lifetime achievement Grammy earlier this year, was cited for songs such as Suzanne, Bird on a Wire and Famous Blue Raincoat. He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
Foster, a 15-time Grammy Award winner originally from Victoria, is known for his work with a pantheon of pop's biggest stars. He also wrote songs such as Chicago's Hard To Say I'm Sorry, Peter Cetera's The Glory of Love and John Parr's Man in Motion. Foster was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame in 2007.
Other songwriters to be admitted:
Jackie DeShannon, who wrote for singers from Ella Fitzgerald to Marianne Faithfull, and is known for her song Put A Little Love In Your Heart.
Johnny Mandel, who wrote for Count Basie, Artie Shaw and others of the swing era, and created songs such as The Shadow of Your Smile, Emily and Close Enough for Love.
Earth, Wind & Fire, the rock and funk band fronted by Maurice White and known for songs such as That's The Way of The World and Shining Star.
The induction ceremony is set for June 17 in New York.

well deserved:)
I have been a Leonard Cohen fan for 28 years feel free to email me if you wish to keep in touch!
Re: Leonard Cohen to be Inducted Into Songwriter's Hall of Fame
I really hope Leonard doesn't recite Tower of Song as a part of his induction speech at the Song Hall. The first time at the Rock Hall was great. The second time at the Grammys made you think of the Rock Hall. It just felt cheap, like okay, you said that already. I don't know, It just didn't feel right. I'm pretty sure the people who atteneded both ceremonies got the same feeling.
Don't expect Lou Reed to give the induction speech this time, or Damien Rice to perform. This is a different crowd from the Rock Hall, but not that different. Don't be surprised if James Taylor, Paul Simon, Judy Collins, Anne Murray or K.D. Lang give the induction speech and performance.
I am so excited to see David Foster being inducted the same year as Leonard Cohen because it gives me hope that Peter Cetera will give the induction speech for Foster and perform with Foster as well. Leonard Cohen and Peter Cetera: my favorite writer and favorite voice, together in the same room.
I hope they pose together for a picture as well. Peter Cetera gave the induction speech for Paul Anka (another Canadian) 18 years ago. I'm hoping that Chicago will finally be inducted into both the Song Hall and the Rock Hall next year!!

I was just looking at the SHOF website. There is a big red carpet affair - and I realized that there would be performances - people honoring the inductees!!Roy wrote:I really hope Leonard doesn't recite Tower of Song as a part of his induction speech at the Song Hall. For example -
We just heard k d lang sing "Hallelujah" again - and I am sort of hoping that "others" will be chosen to honor Leonard. I wouldn't mind seeing Willie Nelson again.Timeless and iconic folk rock powerhouse Crosby, Stills & Nash were presented their induction award by another folk rock icon, James Taylor, who serenaded the rapt audience with a classic CSN medley that took everyone back in time. The gems included "Love The One You're With," "Long Time Gone" and "Teach Your Children."

And - okay - I'll speculate some more about who might honor Leonard.

And both Billy Joel (not an inductee) and Paul Simon are already in New York - unless they are "away."

But if someone does cover "Hallelujah" I would love to see/hear Bob Dylan - since Leonard himself has said that when no one else was interested in the song, Bob Dylan was out there covering it.

Joni Mitchell ...
