Hello,
I am a new member but my first message lh as been cancelled. maybe was it because it was in french ?
I have never read something so silly about Barbara's work !
I mean the articles written by Lighting.
He may think whatever he wants.
I Have seen barbara on stage and I can assure you how wonderful was thet woman in the 60/70 s. Watching her singing "le soleil noir" behind her piano was more than great.
It is true that marlene dietrich looks ridiculous, now, not Barbara.
Watch her playiing piano, singing, "mon enfance", "dis, quand reviensras-tu ?'"...
I am also fed up with americans always mentioning the ugly Edith Piaf as they do not know much about any foreign cultures.
Lighting, you may not like her, but I do not like Brassens either who on stage was very boring !
The two best songwriters are nor brassens or brel, but Barbara and the great Leo Ferre.
Barbara and Cohen are both jewish, he may have heard about her through that fact.

According to me, Her best records are

-"Barbara chante Barbara" (also called, 'l'album à la rose")
1964
- Le mal de vivre 1966

- "La fleur d'amour" 1972

-"Amours incestueuses"
1971

- "La Louve" 1973

her best album live shloud be "Olympia 78"

you have her all work in one box "lma plus belle histoire d'amour"

For those who want to discover rhe main part of her work, you may buy "Barbara, master serie 1".

And of course, orchestrations are better on studio records.

Barbara is more accessible to us foreigners through videos than through her records as she is both beautiful and a great actress. I have several of her 33T records , a "live in concert" cassette, and have been doing my best to bring the beauty of classic chanson to anglophones. Translations on YouTube have opened the eyes and ears of hundreds of people all around the world who have communicated thanks to me, but alas, there has been interference by capitalists who value the selfish dollar more than the diffusion of culture.

For example, Barbara's last video-- a poem for Brel

You may not realize that language education in the states is less intensive than in Europe. French is not as well known by English speakers as English is by French speakers, and speakers of other European languages. So, it's harder for us anglophones to appreciate the great lyricists of France unless we really work at it, as I have.

Lightening, thanks for posting this video. i have never heard of this artist before. I thought the video to be artistically beautiful in every sense and also the performer.

I find quite interesting to read what people from different cultures have to say about Barbara! She was indeed a great songwriter certainly no less than Brel and Brassens.

However, above them all soars in my opinion the greatest French language poet/songwriter of all times: Léo Ferré. Definitely not as accessible but 'Amour Anarchie' is a true masterpiece and even if you don't understand the magnificient lyrics, in some songs his voice and the music which he composed, often arranged and directed himself can take you to 'le septième ciel'. Close your eyes and enjoy.

And for those of you who want to try Quebec French: up there is also Richard Desjardins although his voice alone might not take you to the seventh heaven. ;-)
