Not sure I like the new format. It is quite hard to read and negotiate. Whilst we are on the subject of a new format forum Jarkko what do you think to the idea of having Cohen songs playing in the background of the forum. I am not that computer literate but I just thought that would be a very pleasant way of looking through the forum having a nice song to listen to as well.

I will just have to get used to the new format

It would be nice to hear LC songs while browsing on the forum but unfortunately it is impossible - Sony has all the rights to the songs, and the use of music without permission on a quite popular website like ours would bring us legal problems. It is true that Sony is now linking to this forum from their Leonard-website, but still I doubt that the background music would be an exception they are not ready to make! (And I remember how difficult it was to get their permission just to link to their own 30 sec sound samples some years ago... Without Leonard's very strong ultimatum even that had been impossible!)

(Also, this phpBB software has no background music option as far as I know)

Thats a shame Jarkko 'cos my next suggestion was going to be we had a thread to discuss the song of the week that was being played.

Does copyright apply to bootlegs as well. It is actually the complete song regardless of who is singing it that is copyright is that correct. Sorry for my ignorance.

Sony owns the rights to the songs (text & melody), so we would need their permission even if we let Henning perform the songs here!

(By the way, "bootleg" itself means that the album in question is not authorized and the artists, musicians, original record companies and other copyright holders don't get paid for their work. Bootlegs were typically live recordings of famous artists, recorded by someone in the audience -- sometimes directly from the sound board -- and then released by a record company in a country that didn't have copyright laws. Original bootlegs, vinyl or CD, were factory made and often very professional. With CDR burners it all has changed, now it is so easy to burn just a few copies and advertise them on eBay. I guess the old bootleg-record companies, like Yellow Cat, are out of business. Live recordings that are circulating in the fan community on CDRs are not genuine bootlegs but just, let's say, private recordings.)

Let's consult Wikipedia:
A bootleg recording (This is called Bootlegging) is an audio and/or video recording of a performance that was not officially released by the artist, or under other legal authority. A great many such recordings are simply copied and traded among fans of the artist without financial exchange, but some bootleggers are able to sell these rarities for profit, sometimes by adding professional-quality sound engineering and packaging to the raw material.

Bootlegs can consist of recordings of live performances, or material created in private or professional recording sessions. Changing technologies have had a great impact on the recording, distribution, and varying profitability of the underground industry.

Although distinct from unauthorized copying ("piracy") and counterfeiting, as it involves material which has never been offered for commercial release, bootlegging is considered infringement in many jurisdictions. The copyrights for the song and the right to authorize recordings often reside with the artist, according to several international copyright treaties. The recording, trading and sale of bootlegs continues to thrive, however, even as artists and record companies attempt to provide "authorized" alternatives to satisfy the demand.
Read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootleg_recording
Pirate copies, unauthorized duplicates of material already commercially available, are not bootlegs.
This is another type of illegal records! The Russians have made a lot of pirate copies of Leonard's albums and also counterfeit compilations.

Yes, the signing in trouble seems to be better. Thanks.

My next whoopsie involves PM-ing folks. Some of the text seems to be overlapping other areas on the screen. Don't know if you'd seen that yet. If I squint, I think I can read it, but...
:(

(But I like the little marks you can give a PM. Very cute.) 8)

Has Leonard sold the rights to all songs that he ever recorded including any he does from now on and all songs even after the date of sale

The rights up to and including The Future album were sold, but not the later ones (= songs on TNS and DH and the next album)

Sorry folks but the PM facility is still cutting out if the message is long - meaning you have to sign in again when you send it - meaning the message disappears if you haven't saved it. Big problem.
On the music-while-you-lurk suggestion from Blonde Madonna - I'm sure SONY being the kind and philantropic hearts they are would waive all copyright claims for this site

So if this site had the potential to play music we could listen to TNS and DH without Sony's permission is that correct.

No, that's not correct. Sony has certain record company rights also to songs on TNS and DH but not all the rights.
Rights to the songs belong to Leonard. Permission from both Sony and Leonard (and other copyright holders)
would be needed. Our legally trained members could explain this better.
Also remember that the forum software we are using (phpBB 3.0) has no option to play background music at all!

Paula, you and I could choose a song and while we're both on line we could 'hum' it together. 8)

That is such a good idea Byron. If we state a time and date maybe other could join in and we could all hum along together. I like your thinking
