Sinead O'Connor ~ FYI

Post by lizzytysh »

I haven't heard the album, just a portion of an interview with Sinead on NPR with snippets; however, this new album "Throw Down Your Arms" sounds extremely intriguing [not sure if it's 'political'/'protest' ~ but the title suggests that possibility, at least in part]. However, one song has reggae styling, and every snippet I heard sounded clear in voice and intent, and delightful.

Here's a link from The Guardian's report on it:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/

and here's one from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/

I know I want to hear and read more. She shaved her head [again?] in response to the music industry's insistence that she do something other than that with her hair  .

Sinead has done some beautiful duets with Christy Moore as well. The Mad Lady and Me is just haunting.

 Hi Ali ~

I'm laughing because when I posted this, my exact thought was:

< * no one else may respond to this thread, but I bet Ali will * >

How ironic, somehow ~ Sinead and Christy Moore; the new-to-my-world Christy Moore. Why am I not surprized 8) ? "The Mad Lady and Me" ~ even the title sounds wonderful. I'll bet it is just haunting :) .

Thanks for your feedback :) .

I adore Sinead O'Connor's voice and the intensity with which she sings. Her last (?) album, She Who Dwells... is excellent. I particularly love a live version of the traditional Molly Malone on that album.

My shopping basket at amazon is starting to get heavy and expensive .

"Lord Baker" w/ Cristy Moore is also a great song. Sinead's voice has
such power. My favorite would have to be "My Lagan Love" followed closely
by "Drink Before the War." "My Lagan Love" gives me chills everytime.

Dear Ali, Diane, and Bo ~

Are these songs, by any chance, all on the same album? Please say, "Yes" [but only if you mean it :D ]. I also was numbstruck by the power of her voice; not only in singing, but in speaking, as well. The woman who chooses baldness, specifically notifying the listening [and reading] public that this will continue fully on into her old age ~ is fully unto herself ~ period. All of your descriptions of her singing impact on you speak for themselves.

I believe I have heard only one song by her [from long ago], and I couldn't tell you what it was [as I also heard it long ago]. However, I have always adored her name. Sinead. Is that an Irish name, as I've never heard it before. O'Connor. The two just go together so well, the same as Leonard and Cohen do ~ and with a true sense of power, inclusive.

Now, I am extremely interested in her ~ as much as I am extremely lacking in funds [thanks to Berlin  ]. However, I will be going ahead and purchasing one CD, if you folks could please gather round and make a single recommendation, in light of all of your favourites.

Thank you much :) .

Voyage by Christy is a good place to start as there are a few tracks with Sinead. That would be my recomendation Lizzy, to get the best of both worlds. It is available through Christy's website if you find it difficult to get hold of.

Or if you want Sinead, then I would recommend her CD Sean - Nos Nua

On Raglan Road. Lovely song anyway, and Sinead's version of it is wonderful.

Perhaps the song you've heard of Lizzy is Nothing Compares to You, which is probably Sinead O'Connor's most famous song. I don't have enough albums to make a recommendation, I can only enthuse in a general sort of way.

 ~ Yeah, I know. That not signing in ~ getcha evry time.

You're most likely right on the song, if it's her most famous ~ even though the title's not even familiar. Was it a pretty long time ago?

Quite a while ago, yes. Here is a 'Best of' album, with clips to listen to, on Amazon:

I can also recommend the album I mentioned before. It has a mixture of live stuff, traditional Irish music (some sung in Irish Gaelic), and studio stuff. It's lovely, but I dunno if it's the 'best'. The full title of the album is She Who Dwells in the Secret Place of the Most High Shall Abide Under the Shadow of the Almighty (!).

"Universal Mother" is her best album in my opinion.

Thanks for your recommendation, Guest.

Thanks for the link, Diane ~ she must have a thing for prose titles ~ her most recent one is longish, too  . But, that one  !
