It's a pity

Post by Fljotsdale »

I thought I was going to like this site.

I thought we were Cohen fans. I thought we had come together in a community to exchange information, friendly chit-chat, etc, about Cohen.

I mod on a site where we engage in no-holds-barred debate. We fight ferociously at times. But we stay friends, usually.

It's dead tame compared to this place...

I have felt - reading some exhanges of posts on THIS site - that a knife in the back wouldn't be too far away...

Is this how we want Leonard to see us? Vicious, spiteful, backbiting?

Really?

I don't think it's that bad. The knives are usually pretty dull and if you turn sideways you make less of a target.

The fans we have suffered a hard crash. We are in a confused state and also angered. We demonstrate curious features of characters. The man of action, the not very refined satyr, the sweet but faithful and inflexible defender beyond mother... I see very much love in this aggressiveness, I hope no violence as he would say our Tchoco.

We all want to do the best, and we cannot stand any commentary that seems inopportune.

You are a bunch of beautiful people.

I imagine Leonard reading some of the stuff written, and it makes me feel small and ashamed... sickened about how it would make him feel. I don't want him to see us like this.
Not that he's likely to look in here at the moment, thank goodness.

Hello, we are both newcomers. In many classrooms there is one, sometimes two, who damage the enjoyment for the others. If it becomes too destructive you could approach the moderator - it is for that reason he is there. You would just be one voice in the wilderness, but if he received several complaints I am sure he would look very closely at the matter.

Good Gracious! We have it on the best of authority that he does read this forum. Why, when one of the other Lawsuit threads was raging and raging he sent a "Be Still and Let Them Examine You" portrait in response. Golly! That was exciting!

I hope you stick around Fljotsdale. Emotions are running high right now, but mostly we get on well enough. We are never going to agree completely about everything, and seeing the arguements in print sometimes seems more vehement than the tone of voice in which they might be spoken.

OK, Margaret. :) I guess I'm not exactly being Little Miss Tactful, am I?

I'll shut up, then. :)

We live in a world that is full of diversity, thankfully. I would hate to live in a cookie cutter world. If something offends or rubs you the wrong way, just ignore. The punching bag thread sorry no does not appeal, but there are people who handle things this way and have diferent ways of showing their frustration, I have to believe that no one would actually harm Ms Lynch. There are many passionate people in the Leonard Cohen Files, we all share a common love of his work. It is possible that here are people in this forum that have met him, mostly we know him through his work which is very personal and intimate. So in a way we feel that we know him I totally undersatand this. I know he will come out of this on top. He has been studying Buddhism long enough to survive a bump like this. He is in my mind a Bodhisattva:
A Buddhist term to describe a person who is embarked on the path to enlightenment.
a Bodhisattva may have to live a hundred life times to achieve this, reincarnation is a huge part of Buddhism. This is part of his journey, part of his karma, challenges like this are expected and a way to see into ourselves in order to grow closer to enlightenment. Detachment is also a big part of Buddhism. attachment, clinging causes suffering. He will not be on a street corner like in "Down and out in London and Paris" too many people love him and he has too much talent to end up this way. After the initial feeling if OH CRAP DAMN HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO HIM I can't help but feel optomistic :) . The suppoirt and love that is coming from this forum is a drop in the bucket in the love and support coming to him from all the people who have heard the news and respect and love him, family, friends and fans. Booga booga

It is a well-known phenomenon that some people at discussions have little genuine interest in the theme; and can destroy the enjoyment for everyone else. One person has described the atmosphere here as "spiteful". If you look at the moderator's 'Registration Agreement Terms' you will see that one should "agree not to post any . . . hateful material." This is why I suggested taking the matter further. Hope this answers your question, Paula.

Hi Fljots,

You're new here, as mentioned, and I was of the impression that you enjoyed the site. I'm wondering what changed your mind so dramatically and seemingly overnight?

I think whenever you get a group of people together, there are naturally going to be differing opinions. People are as diverse as their opinions themselves. Where one might think about the discussion another might be quick to anger, quick to speak. Also, as you know, things generally turn out for the best. Maybe it's the passionate nature of the Cohen fan. There are many layers to LCs songs, as there are with the people who listen to and love them.

Hoping you hang in there.

Linda.

Fljotsdale :D , I have a bone to pick with you! I was listening to Field Commander Cohen yesterday, and when Memories was playing I recalled your amusement at the 'naked body' lines...and it wrecked my appreciation of the song! For some reason I was reminded of Chris De Burgh's Patricia the Stripper  , don't know why. Anyway, I've decided to forgive you. I've decided to think of it as adding rather than taking away. After all, I never laughed before whilst listening.

As someone who's been both basher and bashee...I don't get what the big deal is. As long as you keep your postings out of the sewer there shouldn't be a problem. The alliances are always shifting here. Your enemy today will be your friend tomorrow. And vice-versa. The board is like the old joke about the weather in England...you don't like it...wait five minutes...it will change.

So Snow...no need to go complaining to the moderator. What's happened on the board in the last few weeks since you joined is small potatoes compared to what's gone on in the past. Beside, weren't you a prominent contributer over at the NG? I understand that was a real zoo.
