Music has to meet my mood at the time. Leonard's music relaxes and grounds me. I like Lene Lovich because her lyrics are very uplifting. I like to do housework to Pogues, PIL, Pretenders, Led Zepplin and Sexpistols gets me moving fast.
Lyrics are most impotrant.

Hi,
In the "Saddest song in the World" thread, very few found Leonard's songs to be 'sad'. I think LCs lyrics let us think that's it's ok to be on a bummer, to feel angry or sad. Still, there's his humour in there. Black humour at times. Which takes the pressure off of us. We don't have to apologize for being in what ever frame of mind we're in. Be sad, it won't last. And like Dylan said they're 'introspective'.
Linda.

I really like Bjork lyrics and songs (like you Sandra?). I don't find LCs songs sad, even when they are about sadness, I find them articulate and evocative, and sometimes a salve for brokenness.
When I was younger (so much younger than today) I used to love The Cure, but I almost never listen to them these days.

I like sad songs, but even more so, I like lyrics that make you think. I do not find Leonard Cohen songs depressive (and as I write, my Husband is making what he thinks are witty comments such as.... 'Oh, you've joined a Leonard Cohen Forum! Are you going to ask which razor blades are best, because your Prozac has kicked in?......' Well it isn't my fault he has no soul) Perhaps the reason I love Cohen so absolutely is the depth of his poetry - it may be introspective but it is so deep and thought provoking.

No. I can't understand why people think Cohen sings 'sad' songs. He doesn't. Imo, anyway.Steven wrote:When it comes to your taste in the music of other artists, do you

Mostly his songs are nostalgic, lonely - but the lonliness is comfotable not painful, and therefore not actually sad - the tone is usually reflective, or introspective, or amused, or seeking spirituality. Some of the older material is savagely angry, but with connotations and a humour that invokes laughter, not sadness.
His wonderful use of words is pure delight, and has me either smiling or laughing with pleasure.
I like the way he doesn't always sing stuff the same, and uses different words sometimes when he's forgotten (or decided he likes something else better), or misses the key... it make him human, and vital, and a bit careless, and accessible.
I think people key in to their OWN sadness or unhappiness, not Cohen's.
Anyway, his songs don't make me sad. They make me happy.

Only just found this video of LC:
