Marianne Faithfull 1946-2025

Post by Squidgy »

Marianne Faithfull has passed away, age 78.
Perhaps known best as a 60s icon with high soprano voice who covered the Jagger-Richards hit, As Tears Go By. She was also Mick Jagger's girlfriend for a time, the muse who inspired Wild Horses. After their breakup, she descended into addiction and homelessness for several years, acted in several avant-garde films, conquered her addiction and mounted a comeback tour that resulted in several remarkable albums and gained her a loyal cult following. The girlish soprano voice was gone, replaced by a world- weary, and far more interesting, whiskey-and-cigarette howl. I was lucky to see her live at Slim's nightclub in San Francisco in the early 90s. Among many fine offerings, she included her rendition of Leonard's Tower of Song.

Always good to see you here, too, Dar. I wonder if we'll ever get a chance to meet.

Here's a gift for you.
Marianne Faithfull at her very best, in concert 1990 at St. Anne's church, Brooklyn, NY. An hour and a half of words & music that will break your heart & heal it back again. The type of emotions only survivors like us who "get" Leonard Cohen will "get."

I usually just post replies and have never actually started a new topic. Seems I can't do that or I can't figure out how to do that. In response to your "will we ever meet" question Squidgy I started thinking...back in the day we had the chat and the newsgroup but now it's all about Zoom meet-ups. Wonder if someone would want to start a kind of Zoom room or place/time that folks could meet up in Zoom? Might be fun. (I would start a new topic about that if I could figure out how to do it). Anyone want to consider it?

It's just as easy as posting a reply! Just go to the section of the forum where you want to make a new post: start with the Board Index, then find the section you want: in this case, I would suggest "Comments and Questions". Click on the Comments and Questions subforum, and you will see a "New Topic" button, click on that, and you will be starting a brand new topic! Hope that helps!

I don't show that option Lisa. I'll keep looking into it. Thanks.

Sounds good if someone *else* can figure out how to do it. . I only know. wrt video calls, that different phones aren't always compatible with other phones AND the various types of video-call apps. I haven't tried (don't have) Zoom, I have whatsApp. But I've never figured out how to get the sound (microphone) working for one-on-one conversations, so the prospect of setting up a group chat on either whatsApp or Zoom seems daunting. Someone more tech savvy than I would need to set it up & then perhaps "invite" us luddites to join.
Also I'd prefer a small group "on the q.t." to avoid a certain ubiquitous person from hijacking & ruining it.
But it's a good idea, Dar. Now that you know how to Start A New Topic maybe you will. :D

Was only young when I first heard her version of "Ballad of Lucy Jordan", didn't even know there was a Dr. Hook version at the time, and it still sticks in my mind as one of the saddest songs, I had ever heard.

Well I just now learned there is a Dr. Hook version of Lucy Jordan. Gonna look it up now. Thanks, Zimmer.
PS are you the same character as Zimmy from the original Newsgroup?

Definitely not m8, never heard of "Zimmy".

I think, when I joined the forum, I was reading something about Bob Dylan (Zimmerman) and I saved some energy by not writing it all. :D

Ok.
Fwiw, there was a campaign, or rather a running joke in the old newsgroup:
ZIMMY FOR PRESIDENT!
I'm not sure how it started or what it meant, but it was an ongoing source of hilarity for several years.
Zimmy was an all-around music scholar & Dylan fan in particular. I was secretly convinced he WAS Bob Dylan.
Maybe you are yourself, & you're just being coy, same as Zimmy. You never know on the internet.
Anyhoo, glad to meet you at this late date.

I remember the Zimmy for President campaign well. Not sure how many folks here now were a part of the shenanigans in the old newgroup and chat. It was a lively place back in the day.

he Oldie's founding father, Richard Ingrams, played the organ at the memorial service for the great singer

A memorial service for the singer Marianne Faithfull was held at St Mary’s Church in Aldworth, the Berkshire village where Marianne’s late mother, Baroness Erisso, lived. Marianne was buried immediately afterwards, next to her mother, in the churchyard.

Ringo Starr, Bob Geldof and Kate Moss attended. Keith Richards and Marianne Faithfull’s ex-boyfriend Mick Jagger sent flowers.

The service was conducted by the Rev Grant Fensome, the Church of England vicar, assisted by Father Tom Montgomery, a Catholic priest who often visited Marianne in her last years. She was brought up as a Catholic.

A musical tribute was played by rock singer Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Ed Harcourt and Rob McVey.

The organist was Richard Ingrams, former editor of Private Eye and founding father of The Oldie, who has lived in Aldworth for many years and often plays the organ in the church. Richard Ingrams played Jerusalem and Abide With Me.

Father Tom Montgomery gave the address. Marianne’s son, Nicholas Dunbar, gave the eulogy. Marianne’s granddaughter, Eliza Dunbar, sang Handel’s He Shall Feed his Flock.

The congregation heard recordings by Marianne Faithfull of The Gypsy Faerie Queen and She Moved through the Fair. Oscar Dunbar, her grandson, performed Love Is, composed by him and his grandmother.

Father Tom Montgomery read Matthew 11: 25-30, ‘Come to me, all who labour and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.’ The congregation said the Lord’s Prayer.
