Tchocolatl you weren't rude to me just realistic. I am normally realistic but it gets to me when children who have already been through so much trauma then get exploited elsewhere.

Insanitor - the Swedish boy who is missing feared abducted is a second child a ten year old boy. I saw the baby with his dad on the telly. Sweden has lost so many.

:( paula

I was amazed at how many people some countries lost (I mean who are not in the region) at first I was a bit dim about it, thinking Norway?? How on earth? Until the penny dropped...the vikings they are still travelling

Tchocolatl ~

Mayani is the 18-year-old friend of Paula's daughter, Megan. She had gone to Sri Lanka for a month, with her family, to spend time with their relatives there. She and her mother had stayed at their hotel whilst other family members had gone to the beach. She had family members missing and was out of contact herself, after Megan had initially gotten through to her by mobile[?] phone.

Yes, Paula, thanks for clarification on that. I was thinking that 10 was his approximate age.

Sorry I'm a little late with this response, but as with your other forum friends, I am so relieved that you are safe. This awful disaster truly devastated Aceh (and elsewhere) and the human suffering you and your people must be experiencing is hard to comprehend. My thoughts go out to you all at this time.

I just hope, as a close neighbour, our Australian Govt, our recovery workers assisting over there and we as individuals back here donating money, can provide you with the utmost assistance in both the short and longer term :!:

If you are down this way at any time, I'd love to meet up with you here. :D

Sincerely
Andrew (Darby)

Thank you so much, Elizabeth. Paula I understand very well. So many nations are touched, those places are crowded with tourists also.

If enough is made in due time, at least, the epidemics may be avoided.

Sometimes the words chosen to express feelings don't always coincide with how others understand them. However, I don't think that anyone here has expressed their feelings using the word "disaster" without the human cost and the human tragedy being contained within that one word. I can speak for myself when I say that every word I've expressed on the Tsunami was expressing the human aspect first, and then the physical damage, which still continues to affect the human aspect.

Correction :

The only echoe regarding the problem of children was from Leonard Cohen and his Christmas Card. I had noticed at the time. I do it again here.

Its nice to see that people all over the world can act together and help those who was struck by this disaster.

Sometimes i feel ashamed of being swedish, our goverment didnt do very much at all, it took some time for them to act at all.

I know a couple guys who sadly didnt make it back home to Sweden alive, cant say that we where close friends but still i knew them.

My thoughts go to all that have in any way been victims to the disaster,
children, adults, infants, tourists, locals and lets not forget all relatives and friends that have lost their loved ones.

Even my daugther (5yo) was affected by this, by watching tv and listening to radio she heard and saw more then a realized and she said to me and her mother that she didnt want us to leave her in case if something bad would happen.

Hello hrungnir,

Wild world. At least she is witnesses the good side also.

Not a great comfort for those who were and still are affected, I'm afraid, but this is the reality we have to cope with.

Some plans are made for the 5 next years in many western countries. Emotional good will in the emergency is unfortunately not enough in those cases, because too naive people are confronted with the dark side of some of those people which needed help. "Poor" victims turned often into agressors out of too much stress (or only because they have an occasion for some of them), the helpers have to be strong enough to deal with this aspect of the tragedy also, natural and human. I lift my hat to them, in any case in sheer admiration.

Have a nice day hrungnir :D

I don't want in any way to play down the horror of this disaster, but I would just like to mention one positive aspect. That is, the response of individuals to the human tragedy. So much is said about how people are disempowered because they expect the government to act on their behalf, or how people's sensibilities are numbed by news reports of violence every day.

It takes a very special sort of person to be able to go out there and cope with the realities on-site, but anyone can donate funds, and many are doing just that. The way that people have used electronic media to donate direct proves to me that they have not abdicated responsibility to any higher authority, and that they are still deeply affected when they are faced with a disaster that they can do something about.

So true. As I am infected by a virus (and I mean me, not my computer) I feel half dead (let say 3/4 to be accurate - no 7/8. Here.) It is good for the moral to read this.
