sexy voices
i love the female voice on dance me to the end of love (original album) but who is it? is it the case that the backing singers for Leonard become less sexy vocally as the years go by?

Re: sexy voices
Main female vocalist on the album 'Various Positions' is Jennifer Warnes. There were also a number of others including Anjani.

Agreed. More angelic = less sexy, or more anaemic... It's the ageing process - sad but true.Mark A. Murphy wrote: is it the case that the backing singers for Leonard become less sexy vocally as the years go by?

Later edit: Come to think of it, "Old Ideas" is a welcome reversal of that trend - especially Dana Glover's breathy contribution to "Different Sides" !

Re: sexy voices
i would love to see the return of Perla and Julie. i love both of their work. Remember Closing Time? What a knock out combination they were with Leonard on the official video.

Re: sexy voices
Anyone who may have read my posts on the subject of L.C backing singers, would know that I am also a big admirer of Julia and Perla but I have to say that if Old Ideas is to be well represented, then Sharon Robinson really does need to be there in my opinion. Imagine now all three, with Jennifer Warnes coming on for a few numbers...Whoops, gone in to dream mode now

I guess it all started for me sometime around Christmas 1967 and now, goodness me, it's.........2018 and over fifty years later.

Ah, Vicomte...what a dream! Sharon, Jennifer, Julie, and Perla. "IF" this is a tour, I can envision Sharon, Dana Glover, and (truly what a dream) Jennifer joining in. All were on the album. I love Hattie and Charley, but with this album in particular, the deeper, more mature voices would be perfect. We DO know that Leonard will have women with him, don't we!

Re: sexy voices
Oh well, no change, it is Sharon and the Webb Sisters BUT this time the violin is back and the only line up change from the last tour.

Re: sexy voices
It is ALL Jennifer Warnes, on all the tracks - the credits for Various Positions read: VOCALS: LEONARD COHEN, JENNIFER WARNES.
So J. Warnes actually received co-vocalist credit for this album - not on the front cover, buy she did inside.
Anjani was only in the chours of Hallelujah, with many others, and you can't really hear her - and she did not even met Leonard during sessions.
There are some male backing vocals in The Captain as well.
All are credited under "backing vocals" in the booklet, but it is really an actual duet album, in a way, of LC with Jennifer. In the similar fashion later it was Sharon who got the same treatment and honour on Ten New Songs.

Re: sexy voices
True. It's great that Sharon is still on board and I hope she gets lots to do on this tour. Her deep sultry voice goes so well with Leonard's. The more I listen to "Banjo" the more I love her contribution to it.ladydi wrote: with this album in particular, the deeper, more mature voices would be perfect.

True, Sharon really has the voice for Banjo (we appear to be alone in our love of this track
) but I think Perla could also do it justice but hey, Sharon is pretty good, so.......

Re: sexy voices
Actually, in terms of the UHTC band, it's the younger female voices (Webb sisters) that are more angelic, & the older voice (Sharon) that is more sultry & sexier; & Sharon's current voice, IMO, is much sexier than her younger voice; so, if there's any correlation, the ageing process seems to correlate with increased sexiness. Dana Glover seems to have alot of vocal flexibility, as her voice is sometimes very angelic (like in Come Healing) & at other times, her voice is very sexy (like in Anyhow & Different Sides). And I'm guessing that most would agree that age has been more than kind regarding the sexiness of Leonard's voice. . .TipperaryAnn wrote:

Re: sexy voices
You're right of course, holydove - I meant that Leonard as he aged seemed to be surrounding himself with more angelic voices! Sharon is the exception, though - gorgeously earthy.holydove wrote:
