Ye have me intrigued. I'm gonna head to the shop and see if there are any copies left. It had better be better than John Meaghers though. Met him before and he wasn't very nice! If I get a copy I'll scan the article and up load it here for all to see!

This is the blurb for last night's radio programme on Lyric FM, might be of interest, missed the Independent report, jeney
Lyric Feature
Saturday, 7-8pm
The Lyric Feature presents original documentaries and music specials.

Leonard Cohen Leonard Cohen - The Future
Saturday July 17th

In anticipation of Leonard Cohen's concerts in Lissadell House later this month, Bernard Clarke steps into the past to look at the future. In the late 1960s when many of his peers were embracing the counterculture, Leonard Cohen's deeply personal first LPs were released to much acclaim. Two and a half decades later, after many of those voices of the counterculture had either gone silent or moved to the mainstream, Cohen put out The Future (1993) one of the darkest, most sardonic and intriguing albums in his catalogue. "Give me back the Berlin Wall / Give me Stalin and St. Paul," Cohen petitions sarcastically in the title track, adding, "I've seen the future, brother: it is murder."
This programme was originally broadcast in 2008 as part of the Apex series.

Thanks for reminders of Lyric FM programme ; worth listening to, even if only as an excuse to listen to most of "The Future" again ! It was interesting to set it in the context of its time, to hear what was happening in the world at the time. No wonder Leonard was feeling apocalyptic...
I liked the comment about his ability to celebrate and lament at the same time, described as "essentially Jewish" and illustrated by "Closing Time".
One of 2 programmes, the second, focusing on "I'm Your Man", will be on same time, 7 to 8, next Saturday.
Forget your perfect offering -
There is a crack in everything...

Sorry only replying now! The article in the Indo is well written and gave me a warm feeling. Love the title "When two old treasures meet" :) Will try and scan and upload tomorrow PM as working in the AM. Will take a bit of folding and couple of images as it will be too big as one and being a late Sunday night I've had one too many to attempt it now :D Will be worth the wait and the read though!

I know many of you enjoyed the fine article on Leonard and Lissadell in last Saturday's Irish Independent,
"When Two Old Treasures Meet".
Watch out for next Saturday's Irish Independent "Saturday Review" section ( page 24) for another article by Nick Kelly in which he interviews Sharon Robinson and Charley Webb ;-) .

Here is the article with thanks to Carlowmike. In PDF form it is larger but when changing to use as an image the size is decreased so apologies for the tiny writing!

The High is approaching just to the south of Ireland. Let's hope it pushes a bit north for next week. We'll enjoy ourselves either way.

The High is moving northwards. No rain from Wednesday on. I think we are in luck.

Re: Leonard, Lissadell & Diamonds in the Mine

Post by Greg Ross »

A tiny bit of nonsense, all of it true, the stuff of coincidences; deep in the heart of my beloved Kimberley region, in Western Australia, there is a million acre+ cattle station called Lissadell - well, Irish cattlemen started the station way back when - anyhow, as well as being a cattle station (think a Texas ranch, only 20 times bigger), it's also the home to Argyle Diamonds, the fabulously rich diamond mine that also produces the rare pink diamonds, as well as being in the spriritual heartland of some of Australia's greatest Aboriginal artists, the Warmum group, perhaps the most famous was Rover Thomas.

Here is a wonderful song about Rover and his lady Queenie, by Paul Kelly:

I've aslo attached a photo of my motorbike at Lissadell. Where's Lissadell in relation to Perth? 3000kms north of Perth.
